Castello di Cigognola
A castle with more than one thousand years of history
The Castle was built during the early 11th Century.
Its construction was ordered by the powerful Pavian family Sannazzaro, on top of a rock overlooking Scuropasso Valley, and in a strategic location for lookout purposes.

Its main function was that of a fortalice to watch the Emilia Road, and control traffic through this extreme border area of the Duchy of Milan.
The Castle kept its defence function for more than seven centuries, and became the residence of the most important feudal families, as well as the scenario of very famous historical events, such as Malatesta conspiracy against the Earl of Pavia and Duke of Milan, Filippo Maria Visconti.

At the end of feudalism, the castle was used for residential purposes, and it is still a fabulous place, where history permeates its atmosphere.

In Cigognola, passion for tradition and antiquity is reflected in every single object, and becomes a lifestyle.

Wine could not be excluded from this philosophy, or philology of old things. The first vine-growing evidences in this area date back to prehistoric times, with further developments during the Roman period, Middle Ages and Renaissance.

In some 15th century documents, the wine produced in the area of Cigognola is defined as “vino bono puro et neto” (good, pure and clear wine). In a paper dated 1458, Giorgio Visconti Aicardi Scaramuzza, Earl of Cigognola, commits himself to give his brother Alessandro half of his property, including the Castle and vineyards, but reserving the rights on some of the best wine barrels.

The Oltrepò Pavese of Castello di Cigognola has a very strong connection with that past: it is a high-class wine, able to express its potentials, and the real character of vines and its land.
